A luminescent coating applied to certain elements of the sapphire dial \u2013 Roman numerals, hour-markers, power reserve and moon-phase details \u2013 makes them stand out with a distinctive radiance. To guarantee easy read-off of the time, whether by day or night, a special coating covering these same elements blocks out most of the visible spectrum while allowing UV rays to pass through freely. The latter thereby \u2018charge\u2019 the phosphorescent pigments on the outsized-date mechanism and the other luminescent areas. Contrary to the classic Lange moon phase models, which feature a gold moon disk, the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase \u201cLumen\u201d is equipped with a glass disk whose surface has been treated using a patented process.
