Singapore : Au Petit Salut

Since 2007, Au Petit Salut has been serving mainly French delights in a refurbished three-floor building located at Harding Road which is near Dempsey Road, an area with a military past. The land here was once a nutmeg plantation, but sometime around 1860, construction began for a British military installation known as the Tanglin Barracks. This explains why the roads (such as Harding Road and Dempsey Road) were actually named after the commanding officers of the military barracks during British colonial rule. The building where Au Petit Salut is housed was once the venue for aero-modeling activities of the Singapore Youth Flying Club, then known as the Junior Flying Club. Driving here is not an issue, as ample parking space is available for free. Such convenience is coupled with the pleasant ambiance and reasonable prices.

For starters, try the lobster bisque or baked Burgundy snails, and for the main course, perhaps comfort foods such as the Bavette (flank steak) or the very tender braised beef cheeks, a must-try signature dish. One dish served here that has won hearts although admittedly probably not good for the heart itself is the tasty and crispy French duck leg confit. This is a French dish that is particularly agreeable to Asian palates. The wine list is naturally respectable and the meal can be rounded off with the refreshing nougat glacé, another all-time favorite dessert.

The taste of the food and its quality are of a high standard and this has remained consistent over the years thanks to owner Alice Low. Such consistency has led to a regular clientele, which explains why this restaurant hasn’t lost its “wings” and continues to fly high.
