Unveiled at the SIHH 2016, the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase “Lumen” unites for the first time within the same model two A. Lange & Söhne signature features : the mysterious semi-transparent sapphire dial; and the ultra-detailed lunar display. A luminescent coating applied to certain elements of the sapphire dial – Roman numerals, hour-markers, power reserve and moon-phase details – makes them stand out with a distinctive radiance. To guarantee easy read-off of the time, whether by day or night, a special coating covering these same elements blocks out most of the visible spectrum while allowing UV rays to pass through freely. The latter thereby ‘charge’ the phosphorescent pigments on the outsized-date mechanism and the other luminescent areas. Contrary to the classic Lange moon phase models, which feature a gold moon disk, the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase “Lumen” is equipped with a glass disk whose surface has been treated using a patented process. The last stage consists in laser-cutting the moon and 1,164 stars from this same disk.
