2014 will the year of space travel. A pioneer in the field of alarm watches for 70 years and greatly appreciated for its limited-series enamel dials, the Manufacture Vulcain scores a double success with its 50s Presidents’ Pegasus. On the one hand, it tops the iconic Cricket caliber with a Grand Feu enamel dial in two particularly attractive versions; and on the other, it celebrates the opening of the first Vulcain boutique in China honoring the year of the horse in the Chinese calendar. Across centuries and civilizations, Pegasus has symbolized glory, wisdom or poetry, particularly in Greek mythology: by striking the mountain with his hooves, was said to have caused springs of water to appear that became fountains of inspiration, before returning to take is place in the heavens alongside Zeus. The two Grand Feu cloisonné enamel limited series depict him with his wings spread over mountain and sky, and only the swiftest will be able to metaphorically bridle and secure him to their wrist.


Brice Lechevalier is editor-in-chief of GMT and Skippers, which he co-founded in 2000 and 2001 respectively. He has also been CEO of WorldTempus since it joined the GMT Publishing stable, of which he is director and joint shareholder.
